All About Me in 28 Days (Day 6)

Today, I will show you  my favorite item.  Well, I will actually be showing you two items because they just happen to be in the same picture.  I am a softie at heart and I am really sentimental about some things.  My favorite things are often worthless in monetary terms, but priceless in memories or relationships past.  I guess I am really squishy about things.  You’d think that the more expensive things would take this place of honor, but they usually don’t matter to me nearly as much.

Heirlooms, Crafts

The plate on top is one of a set of 6 that I have to remember my Great Aunt Mackey with.  She had apparently collected them decades ago and put them away (for good).  They were found after her passing.  They looked very much  like some dessert plates that I had found in an antique shop.  So, they eventually came to be mine.  The roses are also made of thin decals that have become brittle with age.  So, I hung them on a wall (5 of them over a doorway, and the 6th over this sampler, next to the same door.

The sampler was stitched by my paternal grandmother, Nana.  Nana died when I was around 10 months old.  I never really got to know her.  But, she stitched this little sampler, which hung over my late aunt Edith’s bed, then my father’s crib, and finally, my Uncle Phillip’s bed.  My Aunt Edith had it and a couple of years before she passed away, had it cleaned and reframed and sent it to me.  Her sons weren’t sentimental about it, but Aunt Edith knew that I loved making crafts and quilts, so she knew that it would be loved in my home.

And, I have loved and honored it.  It hung over my boy’s cribs and now resides in my bedroom.  A very tangible reminder of a Nana that I never got to know in this life.  I am so grateful that I have this sampler and the plates to remember these very special women by.
