Vintage Sheets Crafts

Another Hatchett Job, sewing crafts, aprons, vintage sheets

After a few really good deals at local thrift shops, I have amassed a good amount of vintage sheets to use in various projects.  I simply adore the beautiful, feminine prints on them and find them lovely for sewing.Another Hatchett Job, sewing, crafts, aprons, vintage sheets

This apron was crafted from a single king sized pillowcase in a pink roses print (it’s a bit faded in the photos) and some soft rope that hubby had on hand.  It was done in about an hour, even with sewing machine issues and needles breaking.  Love that.

I delivered it today and my friend, Beverly, absolutely loved it.  She and I both have two boys, so we understand the need for a little something practical and pretty sometimes.

Of course, there are a hundred ways to jazz up this simple apron.  The pocket is made of the same fabric and it isn’t very obvious like it would be if I had used a contrasting fabric.  Or some ric-rack, or lace, or bias binding, or piping, or an applique….WHEW!  The ideas just don’t quit coming some days.

Jamberry Nails April Special!

www.jans.jamberrynails.com, Another Hatchett Job, Jan Hatchett

I am sure that many of my readers have realized that my oldest son, who is affectionately known in blogosphere as DS15 and/or my “Aspie”, was diagnosed as being on the Autistic Spectrum, six years ago and that diagnosis completely changed our lives.  His diagnosis is more specifically, High Functioning Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome and it means that he is blessed (and cursed) by being not as severely affected by Autism as many thousands of other kids are.  Blessed because he communicates, laughs, hugs, and makes friends through Boy Scouts.  Cursed because he functions well enough to realize that his social skills aren’t always on par with those of other kids and that he struggles mightily to make friends.  He, quite honestly, knows what he is missing and that breaks this Mama’s heart on a regular basis.

All that to say that Autism Awareness is a VERY big issue in my family!  We love our kids (even the neuro-typical ones, LOL!) and we will do anything to help them succeed and be happy.

www.jans.jamberrynails.com, Another Hatchett Job, Jan Hatchett,

A Mom and Daughter Support Autism Awareness with Jamberry Nails!

We have battled idiotic sterotypes and moronic people, doctors who have been horrifically uneducated, and backstabbing folks.  We have lost friends we have had for years and learned to be glad to have each other.  We take a whole lot less for granted around here.

I have been especially blessed to be able to work from home these last couple of years and spend time homeschooling my boys.  This has been especially rewarding due to the companies

that I have chosen to work with.  Premier Designs is a wonderful, Christian company that stresses family first and a biblical spirit of service and prayer.  Jamberry Nails has begun giving donations to 3 charities through 4 Nail Shield products to help to make the world a better place.  I was almost moved to tears when I learned that one of the first organizations to be benefitted by Jamberry Nails was the National Autism Foundation.  And, the released the product just in time for April, Autism Awareness Month.

Jamberry Nails is donating $2 for each set of Autism Awareness Nail Shields that is sold.  During April, I am matching that donation for any sales made through my personal business (in person or on my website).  PLUS, I will donate $2 for any Nail Shield sold through my business, regardless of designs.  So, during April 2012, every Autism Awareness Nail Shield set I sell will generate $4 in donation to the Autism Foundation and any other set will generate $2 for the Foundation.

Please help me to spread the word!  I’d love to make a HUGE donation in honor of my son, my love!  And please consider trying Jamberry Nails if you haven’t (I can send you a sample to try out) and even to honor these wonderful kids on the Autistic Spectrum this April.

Baby Gift

Another Hatchett Job, sewing, frugal gifts, homemade gifts

Yesterday, I posted about the wonderful gifts that my friend Beverlymade for a new addition to her family.  These are the baby washcloths that I happily made to celebrate the same little girl’s new family.

Baby Wash Cloths have Minkee on the Back

The fabric was scraps from my Mom’s stash with Minkee left over from a quilt backing from my collection.  I found the instructions here.  They were very easy to make, but the Minkee fabric is really creepy crawly to work with and it gave me a really hard time.

I gotta love the fabric for the fronts.  It’s turtles and bunnies playing among silly street signs and carrots.  Plus, the feel of Minkee (even though it is nasty to work with) is heavenly!

Here’s hoping for loads of fun bath times with these.

Spring Has Sprung

Another Hatchett Job, Spring Time,

Well, here in Georgia it is undeniably Springtime!  The birds are chirping and building nests, plants are blooming or preparing to bloom, pollen covers everything, and the temperatures are warm and nice.  Ahhh!

On a personal note, I am sidelined with some tissue damage and arthritis problems in my left foot and on very light duty, so I am taking some time to update my blog and share some recent photos of what I see around me.  I hope you enjoy!

This year, the pink rose bloomed before our prolific yellow climber out back.

Dogwoods sparkle throughout the woods

The woods can sometimes seem like a big green wall, but when the dogwoods bloom, the white color pulls your eye beyond the edge and deep into the trees.  The depth is wonderful!

Blackberry plants budded and ready to bloom

I know that I will probably regret letting the blackberries that invaded the climbing rose bush stay so close to the house, but it does appear that  we will have a bumper crop this year of luscious berries that will be easy to pick!  I can’t resist the promise of free blackberries to jelly and can up for use later and for Christmas gifts, too!

I do regret that I don’t have any wisteria around here, as it is gorgeous and full this year from all of the winter rains.  But, some varieties tear down trees and I like my woods standing!

Frugal Gifts and BFFs

Another Hatchett Job, sewing, quilting, homemade gifts, frugal gifts

One of the things that I never seem to have enough time for is reading blogs that inspire me.  I absolutely adore perusing the posts and getting ideas for crafts, projects, or just getting a chance to consider a different way of doing something.   I read crafty, quilting, business, home and family related, and decorating blogs.  Honestly, I could while away an entire day with them if I let myself.

Another Hatchett Job, sewing, quilting, homemade gifts, frugal gifts

generous baby quilt

But, some of the best inspiration that I get doesn’t come from blogs.  Case in point is my friend, Beverly.  I have known Beverly since I was in 8th grade and she was in the 9th.  She was the Matron of Honor at my wedding.  We go way back!

We both caught the quilting bug at about the same time.  We both learned primarily from books and a few classes, sharing ideas and tips as we slowly built our skills.  But, we have approached quilting a bit differently, my first quilt was a tied 9-patch made with huge chunks of fabrics and borders, while hers was a very orderly Trip Around the World.  That was ages ago and I still am not quite ready to try and do a Trip Around the World.

Beverly does applique (not me–yet) and some of the most precise work that I have seen.  Her methodical nature makes her quilts and quilted projects a bit more complex than mine (I am usually so excited to be working on a project that I throw perfection to the wind

Even Baby V's babydoll will have a new quilt!

and press on for the finish–no matter what) with much better quality piecing.

Since she doesn’t blog her projects, I asked if I could share some of her latest ones, which I think are absolutely stunning!   These projects were all created for a new addition to her family.

Her cousin is in the process of adopting an adorable toddler.  It’s a beautiful story (as an adoptive Mama, I am such a sucker for an adoption story) and Beverly wanted to create

something really special to welcome this little angel into the family.   And she did.  Three times over!

Check out the quilting detail. Love it!

First came a gorgeous (generously sized) baby quilt with a sunshine yellow muslin border and 30s reproduction fabrics.  What made this especially frugal was that most of the materials used were scraps from either hers, my Mom’s, and my collections.  We have a mutual mooching arrangement that is helpful to keep us from spending money unnecessarily.  Plus, it helps make us a tad more creative in color combos, etc. when we are working with what is at hand.  The pattern is a simple Stacked Coins that shows off the

fabrics beautifully!  The backing was a piece of fabric printed with little girl baby dolls in different dresses from my Mom’s stash.  It is perfect!

Bag for Baby V to carry her goodies in

Next came a matching doll blanket for her dollies.  This one has wavy quilting that looks fantastic.  It is hard to believe that she hasn’t done very much machine quilting in the past, preferring to hand quilt.

And then came the gorgeous, custom bag to hold all of her toys and goodies (or even quiet toys for church).  This is complete with prairie points, quilting, and matching fabrics.  The doll quilt fits inside and there is room for a dolly, too!

I have more photos, but I think you get the idea of how special these items are.  I get loads and inspiration from Beverly as we talk, text, and send web links to each other throughout the day.   She is one of the dearest friends I have ever had and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Living Well Wednesday 3.7.12

Natalie Collinson, Living Well Wednesday

Welcome back to this week’s installment of Living Well Wednesday, a meme hosted by the lovely and talented blogger, Natalie Collinson.  Each week, bloggers link up to discuss how they have fared that week toward reaching goals that they have set for themselves.  We hope you will join us over at Natalie’s blog and either participate with a post, or check out what we are up to this week.

This week has literally been up and down.  I lost a couple of pounds and then gained a couple in the last two days, to make for a change of zero.  Of course, no change is better than a real gain, so I am pleased with that part, but bummed a tad about not showing a loss like I did earlier in the week.  At least it is not a mystery why it happened.  I am struggling with self control.  I am an emotional eater and I am working to break that cycle.  Like I have said a million times before, baby steps!

I have done the Zumba on Wii 3 times this week, so that is positive.  I would like to move that closer to 4 or 5, but for now, it is okay.

We are trying to eat at home more, which is always a bit problematic for me.  I am not a very good or inspired cook, although I have yet to kill (or seriously harm) anyone foods that I

prepare.  Needless to say, the kids and hubby aren’t always thrilled with the outcome, but that’s life, I suppose.  Maybe I will inspire one of the kids to become a world class chef (to avoid eating my food)!  A girl can dream, right?

But, in an effort to make our meals healthier, I have been relying more on things like kale and collard greens in addition to the standard veggie fare of salads, green beans, and peas at our house.  Plus, I have found that pre-cut celery, broccoli spears, and baby carrots are working for fast to grab snacks.

How are you incorporating healthier meals this month?

Lynsey Jones, the Party Plan Coach

Welcome to my entry into the Monday Mingle, Business Edition blog hop, hosted by Lynsey Jones, The Party Plan Coach. Each week, business owners share a bit about themselves and their businesses. Please consider linking up with us each Monday. We’d love to get to know you!

Lynsey’s question for today is:  Do you watch sports?  And if so, what are your favorite teams and why?

Um, the short answer to this would be no.  I don’t tend to watch sports.  Before the kids were born, we would watch post-season baseball if the Atlanta Braves were involved.  As my youngest is now 14, it’s fair to say that we haven’t for quite some time.

Sorry to be so dull, but why watch sports when sci-fi is available for viewing???

Welcome to my entry into the Monday Mingle, Business Edition blog hop, hosted by Lynsey Jones, The Party Plan Coach.  Each week, business owners share a bit about themselves and their businesses.   Please consider linking up with us each Monday.  We’d love to get to know you!

Now this post is a teensy different than others.  Somehow, I got off track with the topics and dates to cover them.  So, I am backtracking to last week and catching everyone up on what I should have been talking about….

Lynsey’s question:  What were your best and worst subjects in school?  Do you see either of those in your day to day business?

Fortunately, I was a pretty good student throughout school and didn’t hit too many bumps in the road until college.  Calculus?  Yikes!

I liked most subjects, math being an exception.  I did well enough through high school, but found math to be overly repetitive and boring.  I am not the kind of gal who likes knowing that there is only one way to answer a question!  Other than that, most everything else was based on words and concepts, so that was cool with me.  I enjoyed anything to do with literature, writing, and science best of all.

But, do these apply to my business today?  I guess in a round about kind of way, they do.  I use math daily with reports, statistics, and orders.  Everything else in my business really revolves around logic and communication, skills that I first honed in those high school classes.

Of course, as a homeschooling Mama, it all applies.  Of course, it doesn’t help that younger son is digging the History and Science, but despises math.

I wonder where the heck he gets that from!

Natalie Collinson, Living Well Wednesday

Happy Leap Day!

I didn’t even think about this being Leap Day until I woke up this morning and saw all kinds of stuff on my Facebook Feed about it.  Just another ol’ Wednesday to me!  What have ya’ll got going on for this “extra” day this year?

This has been a truly crazy week for us.  Since I checked in last week, two friends from church have passed away.  My little brother and my youngest son both have had birthdays.  And Mom and I fixed food to take to the grieving families and worked on more quilts.  Some days I think we will never get caught up.

Bad news:  No new weight loss.   Good news:  I was able to maintain last week’s loss.  I am also continuing with the Zumba, which is, incidentally, much tougher in the footwork department on the Wii than it was at the gym.  Now that the weather is warming up a bit, I think more walking will come into play as well.  I love walking, but usually am dragging an obstinate 6’7″ Aspie with me, which can pretty much take the fun right out of it. Younger son is pretty good.  He likes to walk and run and even takes binoculars to check out birds while Mom catches up.   We’ll see, though.

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful week!  I can’t wait to head over to Natalie’s blog and check out how everyone is doing this week.
