Make-do Frame of Mind

Another Hatchett Job, frugal life, sewingTruth being known, I could have just given up and decided that no major sewing, crafting, or quilting could be done because I didn’t have a “proper” space in which to work since we moved to the cabin.

But, that would have been too easy, don’t you think?

Hubby is in the process of designing me a work station, either making it himself or modifying an existing piece of furniture.  He wants it to be efficient and easy to work with and while I appreciate that so much, we both want to keep the cost as low as possible.

So, while we wait to find a good deal and time to make it all happen, I came up with this temporary solution to my sewing dilemma.  The blue portion is a refurbished night stand (that used to be in DS16′s room before the move) and 3 TV tables that I scrounged from the basement.   My brother got them at a yard sale while he was going to school in Orlando, Florida.  They are all basically the same height.

This gives me far more depts behind the machine than I have had since I sewed on the dining room table in our previous home.  It also gives me space to the left of the needle that is helpful when sewing, but a huge help when working with large pieces like quilts.  The shelf and drawer in the night stand also allow for someplace to put a few sewing notions that are used frequently (so I no longer have to hunt them down for every project).  It even fits back under the sloping eaves into what is pretty much wasted space.

On the downside, there is nowhere to put your legs and feet while sewing, so I am sewing from a rocking chair, a bit farther back than I usually would, but that actually gives me a little different perspective when looking at my work.  I don’t mind so much, but I am not trying to sew for 8 hours at a time, so it hasn’t bothered me much.

Some day, I will have a beautiful, custom sewing table with a recessed spot to insert my machine.  But, until then, I am content with my make-do, didn’t cost a penny sewing space.

Till next time,

Another Hatchett Job
