Living Well Wednesdays–5/4/11

I’ll go ahead and apologize in advance for the lack of vlog this week.  It’s been a bit crazy around here.  We are having a few more issues with our oldest kiddo and the possible seizure/motor tic issue.  It’s also the last month of school and I am frantically working to make sure that everything gets finished while we are all quite anxious for summer to get here!

One of my friends, Bev, who was MOH at my wedding has been with her father in law at the hospital this week.  I hope she will let me send over some food tomorrow so that she can take a break.  I made a massive amount of spaghetti sauce today that I can send over.  They sent them home today and I know that she will have her hands full taking care of him.  He had his second stroke.

Another friend, Joy, was it a really bad car wreck today.  A car ran a stop sign and into her.  Last I heard, she is really banged up, but will be fine.  The other driver was life flighted out, so all we know is that he or she was in much worse condition than Joy.  So sad.

We are still dealing with the aftermath of the storms and tornado damage around here.  Everyone knows someone who has died, was injured, or who lost absolutely everything.  Disaster relief  is the name of the game around here with everyone trying to pitch in and help in some way or another.  It’s one thing to see the wreckage of the South on the news, but quite another to see it in person.  The magnitude of the devastation is absolutely heart-wrenching.  It’s like nothing I have ever seen before or even imagined.

Anyways…those are the things that my mind has been on this week.  I have felt severely distracted.

But, I did lose 3 lbs!  So, I am happy.  We are not going to talk about how much I gained prior to losing these 3 lbs, but suffice it to say that I am still “in the hole” so to speak.  But, I am doing better and getting more on track.

I am discovering that diet may be less of an issue than exercise for me.  At least right now.  Tonight, hubby and I went on a really brisk (huff, puff) walk for 30 minutes.  I know that by workout standards, that doesn’t seem like much, but it is something that I can do pretty much every day.  We walk along and talk and it is good to have a bit of together time and since we are just walking on our country road, it isn’t a big deal just to head out.  That seems to make it all a bit easier to get started that way.  We may extend our walks, or I may just do something in the morning and walk with him in the evening.   We’ll just see where that takes us.

As for the dietary component, I am mixing things up a bit.  With the costs of everything around here going up, up, UP lately, I can’t really do the low carbing well anymore.  It requires more meats but also more specialty ingredients to make other things.  I still plan on keeping the carbs lower than most folks, but some whole grain products are coming back into the picture for economy’s sake.  I’ve been making old-fashioned oatmeal for breakfast and tonight, we had whole wheat spaghetti.  I am just trying to be moderate and careful about portion sizes when it comes to the carbs.  And, I will eat fruit when I want it.  Just sayin.

Combined with the exercise, I think I can still stay ahead of the diabetes risk.  I’ve been doing some research and I think it could work for that and keeping off of the blood pressure meds  ( I really don’t want to go back there).  But, it may not really take the weight off (metabolic syndrome makes losing weight SO hard), but if I am healthy, that is likely more important.

But, who knows what the future holds?

Till next time,
