All About Me in 28 Days (Day 3)

Today is a fun one!  Fellow Anglo-philes may recognize the primary cast members of the current incarnation of Doctor Who!  Not only is it the longest running science fiction television series ever, it is just plain ol’ fun.  I want it to be real.  I want to step in the Tardis.  I want to see it all!

I started watching the Doctor as a teen.  They would show it on our local PBS Pledge Drives, late at night.  It was just so campy, so cheesy, so darn fun that I couldn’t take my eyes off of it.  I became a devotee.

I remember the Tom Baker episodes most clearly of all of those that I watched back in the day.  I will always have a fond heart for a ridiculously long, striped scarf (Hogwart’s has NOTHING on the Doctor) or celery in a lapel, but that is another tale of another Doctor!

I am not sure what the appeal was for sure.  But, there is something about an excellent actor impassionately delivering lines about the need for humanity to survive, no, but to thrive…to a paper mache monster who isn’t completely painted (you can see the newsprint at the very bottom) and is wearing high top Converse sneakers.  Most campy sci-fi is campy all round.  This was such high quality work for such a pathetic, low budget that I just wanted to believe.  And I believed out of sheer force of will.  It’s better to believe.

    Jan –

I remember Doctor Who (Tom Baker, especially) on late night PBS. We have watched it for years – most of our married life!

Our favorite current doctor is: David Tenant. Our favorite past doctor is (in this order): Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, and Peter Davison (he also played in “Campion” and “All Creatures Great & Small”).
