Blocks and Math

Once upon a time, there was a former high school English and Science teacher that really was math deficient (at least for most practical uses).  This poor soul joined in a quilt along and ended up making 8 inch blocks instead of the 12 inch blocks that everyone else was making….

And that, my friends, required math (gasp).  So, she worried.  And she fretted.  Another Hatchett Job blog, Quilting, Quilt Along

Then, she finally just “sucked it up” and did the little bit of harmless division that it took to determine….drum roll, please…

With 8 inch squares and no sashing, you can make a lap quilt out of 48 blocks (set 6 x 8 ) that will measure 48 inches x 64 inches, which is pretty generous for a lady (but maybe kind of short for a tall guy).

You can also use 8 inch squares to make a generous Double bed/mostly Queen sized bed quilt with 99 blocks (set 9 x 11) to measure out at 72 inches x 88 inches.

Feeling triumphant, I now must decide what the ultimate use for these (adorable) blocks will be.  I made an additional 9 tonight, for a block total of 17 so far.

I am totally digging these little gems and would love to make a bed sized quilt with them, hand quilted with little x’s running through the center of each little block.  How cute would that be?

Then again, for that number of blocks, I can stash bust a lot and get 2 lap quilts to give away also.

Decisions, decisions….

Oh, and I was thinking of making a vlog about how to set up a simple, effective quilt frame and how to install a quilt to it.  Would anybody be interested in that?

Till next time,
